Literary Breaches

Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass

After a brief read-through, I noticed a good deal of twining. It reminded me of an essay I read on the ambivalence of twins in an African society (as powerful people, but feared because twins represent a break in the natural 1:1 order [Mother-child]).

  • Tweedle-Dum and Tweedle-Dee, who not only look alike (ambivalence of character/individuality), but also tend to share the same physical space
  • The pair of Queens, twins/equal-status figures who nevertheless exist in a hierarchy (Red over White)

  • Interesting. I cannot wait for Fantasy and Reason in English Literature. I will rock that class.
